North Channel Cruise

I'm planning on a two week North Channel Cruise in mid June. I'll probably drive from Ohio to Tobermory, take the Chi-Cheemaun ferry over to South Baymouth (Manitoulin Island), and then drive to Little Current (Manitoulin Island) on Saturday June 5th. I might end up taking the ferry on the morning of the 6th depending on how late I hit the road. At the present time I'm thinking of making a general counter clockwise spin around the North Channel, launching at Spider Bay Marina in Little Current and going north and then west to the Bustard Islands and west and then crossing south to the west end of Manitoulin and returning east again. Of course, all plans are subject to the weather and whims of the person at the helm! Mid June will probably be a bit ahead of the crowd and still kinda nippy. M-12 class association?

I was browsing through a book I had bought thirty years ago and it lists some one-design class association secretaries. At that time, the M12 class association secretary was one Nancy Kilpatrick of Newport Beach, CA. Never knew such a thing existed. Tod

Jiffy reefing system

A week or so ago, I downloaded some great pictures from funtigo that someone had submitted on their jiffy reefing install. I am unable to locate those pictures on line at funtigo at the present time so I don't know who submitted them. I am preparing to install this system on my M15 and have a question regarding the installation of the cheek block on the boom. It apears that it was attached with rivets and my question is what length rivets are needed and what diameter rivets to get. I suspect 5/32" with a grip length of 3/4" or 1/2". If the person whose pictures those were could email me off line at: seawitchlj(a)yahoo.com, I would really appreciate it. Sailing the Great Salt Lake single handed without having the ability to quickly reef is just not a safe practice. Thanks in advance for your assistance. Time for a cool change! Sandra(Seawitch #617)

Can anyone identify the mast extruder for an M15?

I just found out that I do not have a Dwyer DM4 mast on my M15. Dwyer could not identify who the manufacturer of my current mast is. I need to add an extension to my mast but cannot find the the correct size and shape. Can you look at the picture to see if you can identify it or give me some other suggestions. Hi Rachel, It may be total overkill, as you said, but you sure can sleep soundly if you know that you have a good solid attachment to the bottom. When it started blowing, our first action was to row out a second anchor. (like reefing - doing it early is better than when the weather situation keeps deteriorating and then you have to do it.) Two anchors out is MUCH better than just one - and it reduces the swing radius if your boat (like my old one) which liked to sail around the anchor. Pleasant, sound sleep, in total safety, under all conditions, is the ultimate aim. Connie

With all the discussion about anchor type and anchor size, the most important aspect was not discussed. That is the length of the anchor rode. A 10:1 ratio of water depth to anchor rode length is the optimum. Ten foot water depth = 100 foot rode. But this is the ideal condition where you have unlimited swinging room. As the rode gets shorter because of nearby anchored boats, then you need more chain. The whole object is to keep the pull on the anchor as horizontal as possible. That allows the anchor to dig deeper. Deeper = more security. The chain lies on the bottom and keeps the pull on the anchor horizontal. With a short rode, the influence of tidal range, and wakes, will cause a vertical pull on the anchor stock, tearing the anchor away from it's hold on the bottom. At that point, you are drifting through the anchorage. Connie

Anchor line..

I'm going to launch and then anchor out on the tide flats for a few days and I took a look at the line I had on the anchor and don't trust it. I can't remember the rule for strength and length of anchor line. I'll be in about 6-10 feet of water, max, on a sandy bottom. Bobbie
