North Channel Cruise

I'm planning on a two week North Channel Cruise in mid June. I'll probably drive from Ohio to Tobermory, take the Chi-Cheemaun ferry over to South Baymouth (Manitoulin Island), and then drive to Little Current (Manitoulin Island) on Saturday June 5th. I might end up taking the ferry on the morning of the 6th depending on how late I hit the road. At the present time I'm thinking of making a general counter clockwise spin around the North Channel, launching at Spider Bay Marina in Little Current and going north and then west to the Bustard Islands and west and then crossing south to the west end of Manitoulin and returning east again. Of course, all plans are subject to the weather and whims of the person at the helm! Mid June will probably be a bit ahead of the crowd and still kinda nippy. Hi gang Just finished reading Dennis Conner's book, "Sailing Like a Champion". ISBN 0-312-07078-0 Let me recommend it to you. He does an excellent job of explaining all the bits and pieces: hull hydrodynamics; sail aerodynamics; and best of all for the experienced sailor - the why's and how's of controlling sail shape: cunninghams, barber haulers, leech tension, luff tension, etc. I wish I had seen that 40 years ago. I had to learn it all the hard way - bit by bit. Here in once concise volume Conner tells you all you need to know to become a more proficient sailor, even if you are not interested in racing and racing strategy and tactics. At least page through it at your library and see what holes in your knowledge he can fill. Connie

San Juan Island trip report

The first San Juan Islands Montgomery Rendezvous finished up last weekend and we had a great trip. All the Montgomery models were represented with Mark and Roberta Dvorscak in their immaculate older model M23 Faith, Fred and Lilly Shelly with their brand new M23 Sea Cutter on her shakedown cruise, Charless and Marjorie Fowlkes in their M15 Vagabond, Randy Graves in his M15 Dinky Boat, Jon Martin in his M15, and my M17 Tullamore. Also attending was former M23 owner Dick Lane in his Nonsuch 28 Swoose. Dick and Ann Lang showed up for the weekend rally but were unable to bring their M17 Sweet Pea. The timing for the trip worked out great. The weather was mixed, with some sun, some rain, some wind, and some calms, but the biggest advantage was beating the crowds. We were able to get dock space together every night in areas where you would be hard pressed to find a spot to drop a hook during peak season. We did anchor out one night by choice and were rewarded with a beautiful sunset. Our itinerary worked out just as planned, with time spent at Blakely Island Marina, Spencer Spit on Lopez Island, Blind Bay on Shaw Island, Friday Harbor on San Juan Island, Stuart Island Marine State Park, and we even made it up to Sucia Island, the crown jewel of the whole island chain. But maybe the best part of the whole trip was the people. This was a terrific group to sail with and we had a great time getting to know each other. We shared several meals, explored the islands together, and as this was the first time there for most of us, shared the awe and wonder of this beautiful cruising ground. No wonder people all over the world know of the San Juan Islands. The sailing itself was sporadic, seemingly with wind either dead on the nose or shifting all over the compass with periods of calm mixed in, but with enough sailing each day so you didn't feel like you were just motoring through the islands. Probably about a 50/50 mix, which is pretty normal there. It was a real treat to be able to see the M23's side by side. Identical hulls, but very different rigs and cabins. Unfortunately, Sea Cutter wasn't completely rigged yet, and had to sail under main and jury rigged sprit sail only, so she couldn't really show her stuff, but "Thank you" to Fred and Lilly for coming all the way up from Arizona even though they weren't completely ready. At Friday Harbor, we met up with Scott Grometer (M15) who showed us his Flika and even went up Sea Cutters mast to free up the jammed roller furler. It was a unanimous decision among the group that we definitely have to do this again. So, be on the lookout for next years trip and don't miss it. Hi Randy, I have the 2 kg Bruce = 4.4.lbs. - the smallest one that WEST sells. It's handy, does a good job, and I like it a lot for the bottoms I anchor in. My Fortress is the 7 lb model, I bought at a Tag Sale - brand new - for $10, plus a few other goodies, as well. Connie

Rick, For my quick-to-get-at items; gps, sun screen, snacks, sun glasses, horn, FRS radio, water bottle, camera, etc. I use a water proof fanny pack that I attach below the teak bridge deck on my M-15. The fanny pack sandwiches in between the bridge deck and cockpit sole, I attach the fanny pack belt clip around the center board pennant to keep it in place should I take a knock down. The pack is not so big as to block water escaping the cockpit down the drain. When I leave the boat the pack comes with me and I refill and restock it at home. The only items on berths are my sail bag for the jib (main is furled on the boom); and my straw hat, used when sailing if it isn't too windy. Starboard sail locker - below removable shallow tray - I have extra cockpit cushions; the swim ladder; the paddle/boat hook; and the Bimini. Port sail locker: Bruce anchor / chain / rode, and an aluminum Danforth with rode in a narrow plastic box: fenders; fender board; outboard fuel - (2) 1 quart containers; bucket / cleaning materials; mooring lines; flags and pennants; daily use cockpit cushions, small hand operated bilge pump; and probably much more.......... Bow compartment: Fortress anchor with chain and rode Cover over portapotti modified to be used as a table at aft end of cockpit. Scott uses every cubic inch that is available, and with his long trips, his storage method is the refinement of years of use. Hi Connie, Your organization plan is helpful. anchors- I was wondering what size Bruce you carry. I have the 4 lb. Fortess that I use and would like to add a 2nd small sized Bruce or equivalent.
