Connie: Cheer up. Winter finally hit lower Alabama. cold drizzle, high winds, low tides. and we have at least three more weeks of it! To hell with it, Sweetie and I are getting on a cruize ship out of New Orleans for Belize in two week. Pina Colata's, warm surf, snorkeling the reefs. Maybe a hobie cat ride . Hi Steve, Thanks for the Spring time table: only 35 more days of this miserable winter to go............ Snow is still up to the fender of the Trailrite trailer, though the past few days of 40 degree weather has melted the snow load off the M15 tarp, but the ice in the shade of the garage (north side) is still so hard you can touch it with anything short of a flame thrower. ..........and tonight it is supposed to go back to temperatures in the single digits! I was told they sail good and are easy to rig and launch. the centerboard is offset, clearing the cabin space but didn't affect the ability to point on either tack. There is an owner's group and I talked to those folks. Pretty boat but I'd take an M-17 any day Don

An old story that I was told was that the Ancient Egyptians only had cotton for sails on the Nile. They found that by boiling a vat of water and bark from a certain (?) tree, and soaking the sail cloth in it, they lasted longer in the sun. It also gave it the color.

roller furling for my new Montgomery 17?

Hi, My name's Mike Smith and I ordered a new Montgomery 17 two weeks ago. She should be ready for launch by mid-March. I last sailed 15 years ago when I was living on Long Island. I owned a Thistle then which is a 17 foot racer/day sailer and crewed on larger boats. Now I live in Las Vegas and bought the Montgomery 17 for sailing Lake Mead locally and points beyond (Southern California, Sea of Cortez). Could anyone help me make a decision on whether or not to equip the boat with a roller furling jib installed by Montgomery Boats? I've never trailer sailed and wonder if the roller furling set up will complicate launch, retrieval and storage of the boat. The jib being offered with the CDI-FF2 system is 109% which is the same as the working jib. I'm given to understand that the Montgomery 17 is gernerally sailed with a genoa head sail in the light air conditions prevalent in the southwest. I haven't talked to Bob Eeg yet about whether it would be possible to order a 150% set up with reefing capability. I'd enjoy the convenience of roller furling afloat but wonder if a working jib and genoa might be the way to go out of the gate. I'd appreciate some thoughts on this matter. Thanks, Mike

Hi Craig, Just as a point of interest, tanbark colored sails were that color for a reason. White sails are hard on the eyes if you are a fisherman out there 10 hours a day, day in day out, working. So the solution was kill the glare of the white sails with the tan color. Easier on the eyes.................. Connie
