North Channel Cruise

I'm planning on a two week North Channel Cruise in mid June. I'll probably drive from Ohio to Tobermory, take the Chi-Cheemaun ferry over to South Baymouth (Manitoulin Island), and then drive to Little Current (Manitoulin Island) on Saturday June 5th. I might end up taking the ferry on the morning of the 6th depending on how late I hit the road. At the present time I'm thinking of making a general counter clockwise spin around the North Channel, launching at Spider Bay Marina in Little Current and going north and then west to the Bustard Islands and west and then crossing south to the west end of Manitoulin and returning east again. Of course, all plans are subject to the weather and whims of the person at the helm! Mid June will probably be a bit ahead of the crowd and still kinda nippy. To all interested in new sails and like to do hands on things (and are cheap, like me), This is not a commercial. I just purchased a 160% Genoa from Sail Rite for the new CF2 roller reefing/furling gear. With the help of Jud Preston who had done this before we sewed up the precisely cut pieces in about 6 hours; add to that about an hour to finish up the do-dads and there it is. ... a beautiful new Genny all in for $243 (which includes a bottle of fine 12 yr. scotch for Jud). The folks at Sail Rite (www.sailrite.com ) were very helpful and knowledgeable about the M-17 with a standard cut or able to make whatever adjustments to the actual measurements of luff, leach and foot that you want. My mast is a full 23' - 3" off the tabernacle so we added about a foot in luff and leach over the standard .... no additional cost!. I was very impressed and what fun to sail under a hand made rag. They include everything you need except the sewing machine. Cloth to your specs (I chose the dacron Supercruise 4.4 oz at Sail Rites recommendation for the type of sailing I will generally do here in the mountain West), dacron thread, clew, tack and head attachments to your specs and excellent instructions. I could not be more pleased and the sail makes a big difference in the way the boat responds whether in tight or off. My next will be the main. and then .... auto pilots

Trying to find out the whole story on auto pilots for tillers, I know several small auto pilots for tillers are history, but what happened to Simbad autopilot, did it get goggled up by Auto helm. Has anyone got the Auto-Helm 1000 to give there feed back on. In some European countries they advertise Navico tiller autopilot but not here, is it also history. Are there any Tiller-mates still working and available? they worked good for me.

Why not use a stern mounted transducer? I would think it would be much easier to install. The only restriction that I know of is that they won't work with an inboard powered boat but that shouldn't be a problem with the M-15. If you mount an external transducer that isn't on the stern then you have to worry about where to put it so that it won't interfere with the trailer bunks/rollers. As far as brand goes, my brother has a Garmin combo GPS w/map and fish finder that he's had good luck with. M15 #172 total refurb

I've replaced and/or cleaned up all nuts, bolts and screws over the past three weeks; cleaned and refinished all teak; repaired cracked glass under anchor roller and buffed entire hull. The 24 year old looks good as new. I thought I was done with the refurbish, but I inspected the center board and opening on the bottom of the keel while still on the trailer. The pin holding the centerboard in the keel is showing rust signs through the paint. The glass around the inside opening of the keel seems to have disappeared up to an inch high from the bottom of the opening up towards the cabin floor. This could be from the keel swinging around while trailering. Has anyone run across this? If yes, how did you handle it? I'm going to replace the rope attached to the centerboard when I replace the centerboard pin. Any suggestions on what kind of pin should be used, where it can purchased and ways to remove it without destroying the glass holding it in? Norm Bundek M15 #172 nbundek(a)earthlink.net Why Wait? I found this really neat personal web site about camping with your boat, it that had all kinds of things for the double use of everything on the boat (or more) like using a your cooking steamer as an oven to cook morning biskets or how to change the light bulb in your flashlight to LED. also a center cut board that slid up to angle for cushioned back support or down to cover the cockpit for sleeping. The one thing I went back to find was the covering on the handles of your cook ware with something that does not burn yet insulates enough to prevent burning your hands??? well I lost track of it??? any one know anything about it.

Dunno how this would translate into thrust..guess it would depend on the propeller<GG> Inverter cost would be high if it'll take 2hp to drive the boat at a reasonable speed..say at least as well as a 55 pound thrust trolling motor.
