Hi Steve, I had a spinnaker on my big boat and sailing just with my wife, I investigated the sock to tame the spinnaker. The idea is simple: you hoist the spinnaker in the sock. Then when the spinnaker is hoisted, you pull on the UP line that pulls the sock up from the bottom of the spinnaker allowing the spinnaker to fill and fly. When it's time to douse the spinnaker, you pull on the DOWN line, and pull the sock down over the spinnaker: collapsing it into the sock as the sock comes down. (The control lines are an up haul and a down haul) When the sock is all the way down, the spinnaker is back in the sock tube, and all is peaceful and serene. One problem you have flying a spinnaker is that you are running down wind. If the wind speed picks up, you hardly notice it (remember it's wind speed minus boat speed) so you will tend to carry the spinnaker far too long as the wind builds. In my case, we were heading for Buzzards Bay, spinnaker was up and pulling beautifully; when I slowly started noticing that the bow wave was almost coming up to deck level. HUH? What's going on? .......and it was only then that I recognized that it was HIGH time to get the spinnaker down .................... So, be aware, going downwind with a spinnaker can be deceptive for the skipper. Magazines like SAIL and CRUISING have had articles on handling a spinnaker, so if you have access to a good library check out if they have them. Connie

Hi Steve.. There's a book out called "Spinnaker Handling" by Bent Aarre (correct spelling). Like you, I have a spinnaker for my M-17, but never have used it. Now that I'm retired, I'll try it when the weather gets warmer<GG> Regards, Harvey/ Ga M-17 Stargazer #294

I have had so many request I will l ist some of the equipment on M17 #231 all is in good condition one of the three head sails will need some minor reaipr I got in a 40 knot and I had a harken furler that was not as strong as the rest of the boat. Main has stain on it not bad, inside is in good cond., sleeps 3 very good friends, 4 hp evanrude 50 hrs on the engine, all rigging is in good shape trailor is good cond, tires good, main cover jib cover motor cover all blue good cond, I will sell the Nisson 5hp for stroke for an extra $1000.00, always in water new bottom I just could not talk my wife into keeping two boats I bought a Catilina 30 with a diesel in Sept. I really thinks the little M17 is abetter boat but let me try this C30 for a while this is my third m17 all have been wonderful. I live in southeast Texas near Beaumont, Texas. $2500.00 is much to low but that is what i paid for it threee years ago. and that is what I said I would sell it for. I had no idea the response would be so great.I did sail off shore some. I will put some pics on if some one will tell me how. I have a digital camera.Jerry May

Halyard Blocks

I'll condense what I wrote below. Basically, I'd like to know where I should position a furler-cover (that will be a "sock", raised up the furling) halyard block and a topping lift block. When I bought a cruising spinnaker from Kern in 1999, he specified a Harken #166 block (WM #153734) attached with a Ronstan #180 light duty block hangar (WM#120980). The attachment point specified was 8" above the point where the forestay enters the mast. Thost fittings are still shown in the WM 2002 master catalog. It worked for me! Hope this helps. In my quest to get information about rigging and trimming spinnakers (thanks by the way to those of you how responded to my questions yesterday) I ran into this website for UK Sails which PURPORTS to be an "encyclopedia of sails" but which in fact is (to me) a VERY useful (brief!) little introduction to identifying, naming, rigging and trimming all different kinds of sails. Especially good for those of us who may not know all the proper nautical names for everything--here you can learn them.
