The truck carrying Dulcibella, my shiny new Montgomery 17, reached Gainesville (FL) late this afternoon. Boat and trailer are in excellent condition. We started getting compliments even as the unloading proceeded in a mall parking lot. At home, we found she is just a hair too large for the garage. On to Plan B for storage... Now for some boat rigging. The mast/boom package was nicely bubble wrapped, so tomorrow will be like an early Christmas, with presents to open. Thanks, Montgomery Boats! David Fann M17 Dulcibella

I have found some interesting web sites for Bimini products. A site mentioned on a P-boat board, that has a positive endorsement. They make Biminis in Canada. (The admirable suggested I buy a Bimini, rather than make one, as my projects tend to take a looooooooong time to finish.) http://www.gmitopdesign.com/f-english.html? An English site that has some clever hardware. End fittings that screw in and out to adjust for fit. Track-mounted “universal” hinges. The tracks may be mounted on a deck that is not flat. Also a bimini mounted grab rail. http://www.sailcloth.co.uk/ Look under “TA Products”, then “Canopy, Sprayhood and Bimini.” The tracks are under “Type 316”. An Italian site with more clever ideas. Fittings that mount in oar locks. Sliding hinges that mount on the side of a deck. They even make a bimini that has hinges between each support leg and the top arch. >buy a Bimini, rather than make one I've made two biminis. The first one was for an M-15, and I'm still not happy about the balance of headroom, foldability and keeping it clear of the boom. If I do it again I'll copy somebody else's design. The other one was for my Vancouver 25 and worked out much better. The canvas work is (IMHO) pretty easy, but getting the frame right is the tough part. For the actual bending I made my own tool as described in This Old Boat, but Grizzly (www.grizzly.com) now offers an affordable (note that I don't say "cheap") tube bender. Giles Morris

There are NINE great new features on the MSOG as of last night: Martin Johnson's Centerboard Trunk / Keel Joint Renovation on an M-17 Rich Cottrell's Boom Tent on an M-15 Connie Benneck's Trailer Rebuild and Extension David Fann's Race Ratings for Montgomerys Shawn Boles's Marine Survey of his M-17 Grey Mist Thomas Howe's Raise the Montgomery! Owners Write: Anchors David Fann's Custom Boat Cover And oh yeah: EVERY PAGE OF EVERY ISSUE OF THE MONTGOMERY OWNERS NEWSLETTER! Sorta. Spring 1995 thru Fall 1999, anyway, but that doesn't sound nearly as dramatic. That's about 120 pages. It took a bit of doing, but I finally got them done (and you thought I was just sitting here on my hands). I've been working on trying to get the info for a while and it finally came through. Thanks to Joe Kidd for sending me all of his back issues, and those who tried on earlier attempts. If you have the later issues, please email me (I have to have the printed copy and scan it myself to get it to work correctly). I estimate about 30 hours of good reading has been added. Should help February pass a little faster. There may be a possible problem. Although I've omitted the name and address lists that were published twice during this period, I did not delete contact info from the "Marketplace" (Boats/Equipment for Sale) advertisements. If you advertised and want that contact information deleted, email me with the issue date and I'll paint it out. However, I don't believe there's any info given that wouldn't be in a newspaper ad. Also, if someone wants to put together a list of headlines or article descriptions by issue for quick browsing, I'll add it to the MSOG site. Check with me so we can set it up correctly beforehand. I still have many items to get to, so if you've submitted something, please be patient. Sorry it's taking so long to get stuff up, but I've been--well, lazy. And PLEASE, I am easily confused. If you find a page link that is incorrect, it would help a lot if you would e-mail me at msog(a)msog.org and tell me. The site's no good unless it works right, and it won't hurt my feelings. Spreader Ends

My '84 Monty has plastic caps at the ends of the spreaders with plastic pieces that screw onto those caps to hold the shrouds in place. The cap and screw-on piece both have a groove for the wire. Are replacement parts available? If not, would rubber spreader-boots be sufficient to hold the shrouds? I know the spreader boots are designed to prevent sail chafe, which would suggest they're probably not sufficient for the dual function of holding the shrouds.

Boarding Ladders & sculling

Also, has anyone tried the rope type ladders with wooden steps which fold up and can be stored rather that permanently fixed. Hare Tod, For once, I've pre-empted you on something. Sent my rigging to Jerry a couple of weeks ago. Diagnosis: replace a couple of bent turnbuckle studs, replace the backstay (which he feels would have failed by now had it been the forestay--yikes!), and add a backstay adjuster to tension the rig from aft (at my request), now that I have a roller-reefer-furler-on 'er. I just hope the guy knows something about boats and rigging.
