This past weekend I finished most of my winter project to put new bronze hardware on my M17. For the reefing rudder I placed a deck strap on the starboard side of the transom and a jamb cleat on the port side. This should make it easier and faster to raise the rudder. I also placed two turning blocks, a Lewmar 6 winch and cam cleat on the cabin top to get the jib halyard to the cockpit. I would have the project completed if I could just get the Skene chocks delivered. Boy, that Boatlife caulk is messy stuff. Tom M17 Obsessus

For Jerry Montgomery: Jerry, way back in August of 1998, you responded to a message from Connie regarding water leaking in on his M15: You wrote: "it could be leaking thru the joint between the deck and the top of the cb trunk. On the very early 15's the liner came up almost to the bottom of the deck and bonding the deck to the actual top of the trunk (not the liner) was difficult to do well and even more difficult to inspect. ... Contact me for a solution after determining the problem. Jerry" I've pretty much narrowed down my leaking problem to this joint--I've got the centerboard out and the boat up on stands, and I can see up there to the joint real well; it appears that it may be slightly misaligned, and possibly incompletely sealed.--I can see it well, but it's going to be damn hard to reach. If you have any hints or suggestions for repairing this joint (as you intimate in your note) I'd be really grateful to hear them. Thanks for your help! Steve McClellan M15 #152 Chicago Area

Hi Connie; You wrote this detailed description of how to cut out a shallow sail locker about a year ago. Well, after a year of thinking about it, I finally did it. So far so good. I didn'r need to put in any kind of additional hatch though. With my 1st mate manning a large screwdriver outside, I with the help a couple of extensions on the socket wrench was able to hold the nuts from the inside. My question has to do with cutting the Fulton MM pad down to a usable size. The back side of the pad I have is honeycombed with a combination of slots and holes. Was you pad like this or solid? If it was the same as mine, there is a place to cut it leaving only a small recess in the top portion, does that seem to work ok? I came to the same conclusion as you when I dry fitted the new MM, it sits way to low on the transom with the full size pad. Also, I want to get my SS Honda into the water an inch or two more. Jerry, I hope to see you in Monterey so we may adjust the tequila supply/inbalance problem I have been hearing so much about as of late. This needs attention and better sooner than later! That said, I will probably modify the masthead casting to fit whatever I end up using. I am not adverse to fixed spreaders but I just want an inherently stiffer section. I have never been impressed with the MacGregor section. It is FINE for the std. rig, in fact very good, but when it gets that little bit longer it seems too noodly for a masthead rig. I think it is the, for lack of the proper term, the die shape (teardrop) of the section that gives it the characteristics. I have the BEST fabricator/welder as a friend here in town so mods are no problem. As to who triumphs over whom-the arena will show the results. (you are probably correct, as my Reggies (short rig sails- OEM* and proud) are tired. I refuse to put new 'short' sails on the boat. Stubborn opinionated (CheaP) ol' me. In tall rig mode I will prevail! If you have the time at Bob's shop on Monday, I would be most appreciative for some figures so I may arrive at the ultimate-EXTRUSION CONCLUSION. Life is Good Gary O. Jerry, what in your opinion would be the better board? I was suprised a few months ago by your comments regarding the shape of the rudder being so critical; does this also apply to the board shape? How would the weight difference change the sailing characteristics of the boat? I had the cast iron board removed, sandblasted, and painted when I first bought Wild Hare, but would still be interested in an improved model.

Jerry, I guess I send this e-mail here cuz I don't know where you will be to get it!?!? (get it?) Thank You for the offer to investigate my perverse concern for the mass of the mast. Long time no see! You have a standing invite when your in the 'hood. Just call so I know when. I am refurbishing my boat and am looking to replace the mast so it will fit my tall rig sails. I am not enamored with the OEM section (in the tall version) its fine in the std. I think I am looking at a 'D' section for less "noodle" action when in the tall config. Of course you would be called upon for wire work. I am fairing keel, bonding cabin sole,relacing deck wood trim blah blah. You will appreciate the fact that 1 side of my boat is yellow and the other side and transom are white. I will finish the transformation from yeller to white ASAIGTI. I am trying to get this boat suitable for the August gig in Monterey. If you have time on the next trip thru to the Old Pueblo call. Sandy, I am searching for a section to replace my std rig mast with to make my tall rig. I don't want a section that is heavier and the usual dimensions for sections include - weight per foot- hence the request. I do not want to use the original section because in the tall rig lengths it is prone to acting like a noodle! Mast sections carry with them the weight /ft designation so a person may use this info to determine the effect of the spar on the righting moment. If a person would be looking for a replacement spar or to change shapes or length of said spar this information is needed and helpful. Or if a person is designing a boat and needs a section to meet design criteria. This is akin to tire data when one decides to change the size of your tires. Who needs to know the diameter (read: who cares) of your 185/60-15 tire? the person that is interested in changing the type/size/width of the tires on a car. I really just want the info to impress nonsailors with the fact I know the wt/ft of the stick thing. Sounds like good conversation for my date at the Chihuly opening next Thursday at the art museum, or I am a weak weenie and don't want to try to lift that thing til I watch another season of Jack LaLane! Or I am bored. I want to know and they will not hide it from us! Gary O.
