Hi Giles, The reason you have difficulty finding technical items in Washington DC is because the place is only filled with politicians and lawyers. According to an enginering friend in DC he tells me that most of them don't even know which end of a screwwdriver is the active end. He keeps trying to teach them, but has now given up. He just retrieves things like the shop vacs they throw away because they don't know enough to clean the filter; so just throw it away and buy another one..... Electrical power source?

Just wondering if anyone has considered or is using for a 12 volt DC power source, one of the many "jump start" type of battery, jumper cable, and lighter plug kits that are available. West Marine has one listed for marine use, Prestone has one available, Road Pro, Sears and there are probably many more. It's a 12 VDC power pack with jumper cables, a lighter plug, and some have a built in light, available power gauge, air compressor or some other accessories that is rechargeable from 110 AC house current, or maybe 12 VDC from your vehicle cigarette lighter plug while you are driving to the launch site. They are a sealed (not gel ) type, and are rated in the neighborhood of 12 - 17 amp hours, depending on the specific company. They are to be used generally in an upright position, however they are capable of withstanding non-upright orientation for short periods. I'm wondering if this might be a viable source for power for GPS, Fishfinder, Spotlight, and running/anchor lights, or the electric hair dryer for my admirable. Any thoughts? The MSOG Lives On!, Keith, and New M-7'11" Pics

Well, we didn't quite raise enough to buy the second new 23; we're only a few tens of thousands of dollars short. But as of Saturday the 27th, we hit the mark to keep the web site running for another year. Thank you to everyone who helped out. To avoid another Red Cross situation, you should know that any additional funds received after next Wednesday will go toward helping your faithful web dog quench his voracious thirst while slaving over a hot keyboard. With all of the new owners that have joined us in the past year or two, there may be some misunderstanding on something, so let's give credit where credit is due. Keith Diehl started this listserver long before the web site came online; the MSOG site just links to it. I believe the listserver is the most important resource we have. Almost of the information on the MSOG site was generated as a result of discussion through this listserver. Keith is to be commended for maintaining it for many years. It seems to me that the MSOG menues have been slowing down lately to the point of annoyance. Either that or I'm taking a lot of really short naps. It's not bad via ethernet, but modem-based access seems slow. I may have put in too many menu items, in which case I'll overhaul the navigation system. Please let me know if you've experienced the same slow-down or nap-times. You can e-mail me directly at msog(a)msog.org. Same goes for any other complaints. Hi Wayne.. Stargazer's former owner had a depth finder finder "puck" epoxied to the hull. Regrettably, the head unit was broken, and I never replaced it. If you want to do it this way, use a hard epoxy, not pliable bedding compound. Harvey/Ga M-17 Stargazer #294

Hi Craig... I may have mentioned the addition of the tranny cooler, as that's what I had U-haul do when they installed the trailer hitch. U-Haul had three models, and I selected the middle one. It was a bit of overkill from the specs, but only a little more, and how much is a tranny repair?? No real hills between Ft. Myers and Atlanta, but I also trailered it thru the Tennessee mountains to the eastern part of Lake Cherokee. No problems, as I watched the temperature gauge like a hawk, and it hardly moved above normal...well, maybe a bit higher pulling the steep mountain then on the flat<GG> I think an auto tranny is the way to go, if there's a choice. I upgraded to a 1999 Nissan Pathfinder with a 5000 lb. towing limit. I was told that I wouldn't need a tranny cooler, as the capacity was built in. I haven't towed very much or long distance with the Pathfinder, as I have Stargazer in the water now, so I can't say how it compares to the old Aerostar, but it seems to be at least as good, and the bed of the SUV is a few inches higher, so water won't get in while launching from shallow ramps. Regarding manual vs. automatic on a small truck: How would a small truck with manual transmission perform vs one with an automatic when towing my M15 from the San Francisco Bay area to the Sierra Nevadas, up and down steep grades at elevations over 10,000 feet on hot summer days? Purchasing a small used truck with a manual transmission is significantly less expensive than one with an automatic. Past postings on this list had convinced me to go with an automatic but now I'm beginning to think otherwise. I need some good advice for mountain towing with a small truck. I pulled my M-17 with a Ford Aerostar 3L auto. I doubt that boat and trailer weigh more then 2500 lbs, unless it's carrying a lot of entra gear. Mine had an 8hp Evinrude, and it trailered sweet all the way from Ft. Myers, Fla. to Atlanta, Ga Harvey/Ga M-17 Stargazer #294

new M15 owner

I was lucky to purchase a 1985 M15 with Ivory hull with Green trim last week when I was in California. It is in great shape but I am making "improvements" such as removing the bow pulpit which I did not feel I needed. As soon as the weather warms I will fill the holes; it snowed a little today in Bozeman. In the rudder I noticed a loose pin on the rod connecting the tiller to the rudder blade. To get to the pin I had to dis-assemble the rudder. This took some pounding due to corrosion between the stainless bolts and the aluminum spacers. I plan to refinish the aluminum cheeks as soon as I can find some Zinc Chromate primer in my little town. Think I will put some anti-seizing compound on the bolts when I put it back together, that is if I can remember where all the parts go! I am thinking about cutting out the well in the starboard locker to get access to that space. There were about five loose blocks of Styrofoam in this space, each about the size of a shoe box. Is this extra floatation needed? After some minor rigging changes and painting the trailer and finding some new tires I should be ready to head for the water. We DO have some lakes in Montana but they are frozen part of the year. I have trailed other boats to Puget Sound, Baja, and the Florida Keys. Am not sure what we will do with the M15 but it sure is cute! Thanks to the encouragement of several members of this group. Charless Fowlkes Bozeman, MT

Hi Rich, FWIW: About 10 years ago when I bought the MICRO in Michigan, I had a 4 cylinder GOLF (100 HP) with a standard transmission. When we got to Michigan, I found that the MICRO was on a trailer (I presume it came from a mobile home) and later calculations proved that the trailer weighed about twice what the MICRO weighed. So, when we hooked up, the poor little Golf was being asked to haul at least 3000 lbs. The Golf did it very well. From Michigan to Florida via I-75, and then back home to Connecticut via I-95. I-75 goes through a considerable mountanous area, and though I had to shift down from 5th to 4th to 3rd and very occasionally to 2nd, the Golf performed flawlessly, and we arrived in Florida, and a month later back in Connecticut without incident. Naturally, once I got back to Connecticut, the first order of business was to find a "proper" trailer that reflected the weight it had to carry. Having found the new trailer, and modifying it for the MICRO, it was a very nice rig to tow with the Golf, and it went back and forth to Florida twice; to Lake Champlain through the Adirondack mountains, with no mechanical problems. Presently I am hauling our M15 with a VW GOLF GTI with automatic transmission, and I'm very happy with the set-up, though this spring I'll add brakes to the trailer.
