The truck carrying Dulcibella, my shiny new Montgomery 17, reached Gainesville (FL) late this afternoon. Boat and trailer are in excellent condition. We started getting compliments even as the unloading proceeded in a mall parking lot. At home, we found she is just a hair too large for the garage. On to Plan B for storage... Now for some boat rigging. The mast/boom package was nicely bubble wrapped, so tomorrow will be like an early Christmas, with presents to open. Thanks, Montgomery Boats! David Fann M17 Dulcibella

Steve, I have the same bulkhead that you see. It keeps thing in place in the sail locker. This bulkhead - about 1 foot high is located on both sides of the boat. My port sail locker, however, has a wall on the inside side, i.e., going from the side of the cockpit seat wall to the bottom of the hull. This keeps thing in the sail locker from rolling under the cockpit sole, and disappearing forever! Now that I cut out the starboard side shallow locker, there is no wall down there. All that is located there are the styrofoam flotation logs. So, the new storage area is only good for large, easily reached and grabbed objects; which is why I have my Bimini, my extra cushions, boarding ladder, etc. stored there. Incidentally, I drilled holes on each end of the shallow locker; threaded about an 1/8th inch line through the holes, put on a piece of plastic tubing as a handle, and tied off the lines on the outside of the shallow locker. This way, I have readily accessible handles for lifting out the locker when I wan to get at the "goodies" that are stored underneath. If you are thinking of doing this modification, let me know and I'll give you more detailed instructions on how I did it. No sense of reinventing the wheel! Hello Fellow sailors, Here are a couple of items that are of interest to Mboaters. 1. The Small Craft Advisor magazine has a discussion going about the M15 & M17 and pointing ability. Those of us that sail one know how well they point. If there's someone that could explain the "why" that would be beneficial to the discussion. It's good reading and will make you want to go cruising. To all, many thanks for your enthusiastic welcome. Twelve years ago I joined the Windmill Class (15'6" racing sloop) largely on the strength of the friendly people in the class. Studying the class membership is a good way to choose a boat. I quickly discovered that hanging out with Windmill owners was as much fun as sailing the sporty Windmill; they are a good sort. Seems that way with the Montgomery folk, as well: I lurked on your site for some months before buying a boat. I'm also pleased to note that the Windmill and M-15 jibs are exactly the same dimensions, so I have a basement full of ex-racing jibs, dacron still crackly, from which to choose. Centerboard

I'm sure this question has been addressed exhaustively in the mailing list archives, but I've never had much success accessing them. Is it possible to galvanize the older M17's centerboard? If so, has anyone out there done so? Would galvanization be preferable to epoxy painting? I imagine epoxy painting and filling would be cheaper and would make faering easier. Would galvanization be prohibitively expensive? Would galvanization give complete corrosion resistance? Thanks!

There has been discussion on the Potter list of using a fiberglass incased plywood board to replace the centerboard. They originally have a 250 to 280# centerboard and no weighted keel like the Montys, getting their stability from their flatter bottom, and have been said to sail fine with the plywood board. I wonder how that would work on a Monty and if the loss of weight would be significant. Also, of course, the issue of keeping it down and not allowing it to "float" up would have to be addressed.
