Hi Ron & Cat, We are not local Pacific northwest sailors but, for a total of five months we sailed the Islands during the summer months of 2000 & 2001. We plan on returning during 2003. I will give you the short list, then will be glad to talk to you off line for the details so I won't bore everyone and cause those that are lucky enough to still be sailing to fall overboard. We are from NM and are used to a different environment than what the NW has to offer. 1. Invest in a good pair of long johns and dress in layers because temperatures change significantly during the day whether on land or sailing. 2. Use good quality rainwear, because it will rain. Take along good books to read & games for bad weather. 3. Be sure to have good ground tackle. Some anchorage's require lots of rode (20-60 feet depths, with large tidal ranges--some up to 15 feet). 4. Get a good cruising guide, like Wagoner. This book is also helpful in telling you where you can get provisions--an important issue as not all islands have grocery stores. Also get some good charts, like Maptech (book) Pacific Northwest Region 15. 5. Get a good current and tide book. I like the Current Atlas (the Canadian one) because all you have to do is look at the size of the arrows for the day and time. It is real easy. You will use this with Washburne's Tables for the current year. 6. Expect to see a lot of marine life. We got lucky our first time out and saw three different pods of Orcas up close and personal. The scenery, especially in the Gulf Islands, is spectacular, and it only gets better the further north you go. And the people are terrific, especially the Canadians. There is so much to see and do it is unbelievable. 7. At many marine parks, there will be buoys, dock space, showers, etc. 8. Wagoner's Cruising Guide will also tell you what you can and cannot take across the border, and will tell you the places where you can clear customs and how to do so. 8. Consider using credit cards in Canada as the exchange rate is, or at least was when we were there, very good, and the charges to the credit card use the exchange rate that is in effect on the day and time you purchase things. I could go on for hours about specific towns and anchorage's you need to see and experience. I hope some local folks will expand on this. You will have a great time just pay attention plan each days travel in advance, have alternatives in case the weather deteriorates, and read your charts carefully just like you would for any place you travel. boom tents and similar contrivances

GRACE has a homemade bimini that we set up whenever we anchor for very long. It consists of some aluminum tubing with standard bimini fittings a few pieces of small line and one large rectangular piece of Sunbrella. It attaches forward at the shrouds and is supported aft by telescoping aluminum tubing (again standard bimini items sold at West Marine). It takes less than 5 minutes to set up and folds down out of the way on the transom like a convertible top when not in use. We have only used it in nice weather (as a sunshade and it also keeps dew from forming on items left in the cockpit somewhat). It is quite an ingenious setup for which I take no credit whatsoever (it was designed and built by Grace's former owner). When I roll Grace out from under her winter cover I will take some photos and send them to the website if anybody is interested. Mark M17 #400 GRACE

This sailboat calculator is great fun to noodle with! http://www.image-ination.com/sailcalc.html I think the results should be taken with a large grain of salt, however. The calculation makes no effort to locate the center of gravity or determine freeboard. If this were a physics problem from my college days, I think I'd get a tongue lashing for trying to make this approach float! According to the calculator, a P-15 with a 400# payload is more stable than an M-15 with the same...I think not! I guess there's no substitute for turning boats over and seeing what happens. My friend Scott pointed out that floatation run up the mast can make a great difference in these situations-good point made. So, any intrepid volunteers willing to turn their pride and joy over in the interests of science? I would, naturally, except the lake's mighty cold now and the water level is down... Hi Ron & Cat, We live in N. Idaho and have been contemplating a similiar sail. The North West Potters group is active in the Pudget Sound/Gulf Island area, they have several group sails each year. I like the freestanding aspect of the Timberline option Craig. And I really like how inexpensive this Eureka tent is...probably just over a hundred bucks most places for the 4-person. I don't know about size because I never tried it...could be too big for a fact. Great tent Rich. Thanks for the pics (you too Doug). Chukar lacks stantions/lifelines. I suspect that's the case with most M15s. The book "Frugal Yachting" by Larry Brown has some photos of conestoga tents with small pvc pipe used for the supports. I have thought about using fishing rod holders, flag pole holders or oar lock sockets to hold up such a tent. The conestoga style would have an advantage with head room. An advangtage of the boom tent design is it may be set over the mast when trailer camping. Steve R. You know, another idea I've thought about is buying a used four person Eureka Timberline tent (or new for that matter--it's an inexpensive tent), and using the frame with just the rain fly.
