You're not the only one. I don't hate the album. It's just that when I first heard RoY, FOT80s1&3, PGTW, even 21 Century (never heard Sideways yet), there were lots of songs which instantly became favourites. This one will need to grow on me. It does sound cheesy and amateurish but it's bleepy (and Erasureish). I like bleepy (and Erasure) but, well, all the songs sound the same. Keep in mind that the band evolves with each album. So this one, we only get Ivan and Stefan on the same gear as RoY. Good idea but a different style of music than we expected. So that's why I'm giving it another chance. BEsides, I woke up with Telepathy in my head this morning! :) I also like Dancing in the Moonlight and the last song (forget the name at the moment) sounds like it comes from PGTW. Aside from that, the graphics inside are amazing! I love them! Ivan's a pretty good digital artist. ----- Original Message ----- From: "moose" <moose@pigpendigital.com> To: "if you want to." <men-without-hats@mailman.xmission.com> Sent: Thursday, April 03, 2003 7:08 PM Subject: [Men Without Hats] new album

i've been an erasure fan since before erasure were erasure (is that possible? - ed) & i can understand your comparisons but, and its a big but, vince's songs are far better than these. the drums are way too cheesy & thin and the 'old analogue gear' from the early years has hardly been pushed in to a trot, which is a shame as i know what their gear can do. i'll give it a few more plays over the coming week & give my reaction then...

Tonigth I put in my Rhythm of Youth live 1983 bootleg in my cd-rom to listen to. My winamp did it's usual thing of looking on the Interent for the tracklisting. And it found it! I guess someone added the tracklisting to the cddb (or whatever it's called)database?
I wonder if WinAmp takes any corrections or user-info and adds that to the cddb for unknown albums? When I put the Sounds Familiar boot (ROY Concert that Alec created) in my drive, Media Player said unknown album, but I added track names, genre, and band name to each of the tracks (except for the German ones, which I made up some stuff since I didn't know the names of the artists.) I had to do the same for NHBTP, except I've not been able to change the album name and band (i.e. it still says unkown. I'll try playing through WinAmp) Chris --- Daniele Rossi <daniele@superspud.com> wrote:

Chris, regarding the Sounds Familiar boot, the German Safety Dance track is Nur Wir Zwei by the German band Bang Bang and the dub version is included too. Some people may also have The Echoing Green Safety Dance cover as a bonus track on their cd also. I named the tracks when I recorded the cd so some media players might recognize the cd text and show the track listing while others may not. I also burned it using Easy CD Creator so anybody with that program should be able to browse the cd there and see the track listing too. I think I've made 3 versions of this boot with differing bonus tracks and even one that includes the cover art and a MWH screen saver. Just depends when you traded with me what version you got. I'm still waiting for NHBTP and expect it any day now. Can't wait to hear it. I guess the dancing dwarf delivering the cds is taking his time getting to Texas! Cheers everyone. Regards. don't think the album is good? go get really really high and give the album a re-listen. you will change your mind. and fully appreciate the artwork as well. :) think the lyrics are meaningless? see above. otherwise you just are not in a place where you can recieve the lyrics. they make perfect sense to me, some of the finest yet. everyone else catch the safety dance riff in one of the songs? roses, it was. -rain

go get really really high and give the album a re-listen. you will change your mind. any album that you have to do this to isn't worthwhile in my opinion. sure, a disc can be "better" appreciated by people who choose to do that, but if you don't want to do that, then you should still be able to appreciate it and enjoy it.
ditto for understanding lyrics.
otherwise you just are not in a place where you can recieve the lyrics. well written lyrics can be "received" in any "place".

"get really high" as in take drugs & give the album another spin? get real... some of us don't need 'external influences' to appreciate good music. my point was that this album isn't their best work, for the reasons i have already stated. my hifi is a good one so i can clearly hear the hi's & the lo's, but with the gear they had at their disposal i was expecting more.
and fully appreciate the artwork as well. :) as a professional musician myself who is also heavily involved in artwork, graphic design, computers etc i can see what has been done but simply don't like it... personal choice maybe...

yeah. (responding to letter from moose and from alex, all confusingly bundled into one)
"get really high" as in take drugs & give the album another spin? get real... some of us don't need 'external influences' to appreciate good music.
to be blunt, apparently maybe some of you do need external influences? i was not saying that i do. i am quite real, thank you. at least i am pretty sure i am anyhow. no need to be rude. and so far this eve i have listened to the new album at least 20 times. i cannot seem to turn it off for long.....!

well, yes. but this is an issue for psychology class. everyone should be able to enjoy stuff without taking drugs. :) i did not state that drugs were necessary to enjoy this album. merely suggested that it could help those who are not too fond of it thus far. i for one can't stop listening to it.
ditto for understanding lyrics.
well, when the lyrics are written by people who ARE taking drugs, they sure as hell are easier understood by people in those same states....... so honestly, if you want the full meaning of the lyrics, ............
otherwise you just are not in a place where you can recieve the lyrics. well written lyrics can be "received" in any "place".
okay, that is your opinion, Alex. i think that the best lyrics are cleverly disguised so that their true meaning in unknown until you go there. what is 'Nadine' about? i listened to men without hats from 1983 onward. i did not enter a state where i understood the lyrics until 1996. so my personal experience differs from your opinion. back to moose-
my point was that this album isn't their best work, for the reasons i have already stated.
you mentioned nothing about this album not being their best work in your previous letter, unless i missed it. you did say that erasure was better than this, and that the drums are cheesy and thin, hence i missed your point.
my hifi is a good one so i can clearly hear the hi's & the lo's, but with the gear they had at their disposal i was expecting more.
expectations are certain to make one unhappy. hence i suggested getting high. it has a tendency to free a person of these so that they listen to an album with a fresh, non-expecting mind. i was not trying to upset anyone, i honestly think that if you are not enjoying the album, that getting high and giving it a spin might help. you may find a taste for the music develop there, one that lasts far beyond that particular experience. if you feel that they did not do as much with their gear as they could have, i am certain then that your next work will reflect this as you push your gear to the limits. (smile)
and fully appreciate the artwork as well. :) as a professional musician myself who is also heavily involved in artwork, graphic design, computers etc i can see what has been done but simply don't like it... personal choice maybe...

hey cool, i am one of those too. and i love the artwork. if you don't, cool. but again, i merely suggested getting high to free yourself of your mind and its expectations and comparative perceptions - maybe you would forget that you know all the technicalities involved in creating the artwork (and the sound) for that matter and just appreciate it as if you have no clue how any of it was done, which is truly one of the more wondrous places to be in. it is a problem with musicians, trust me, i know. everytime i hear a drum i can tell you which machine did it, ya know? ;) rain p.s. did anyone else notice at the end of superstar he says at one point "HEY LUCIFER"?!

yes it will, as i am a beta tester for a few companies & actually have some of my ideas incorporated into new products. the album, entitled '_attitudes_of_a_difficult_mind', will be available thru metropolis & major cd outlets shortly... };-) <-- smiling back email : moose@alaskahighway.com music sites : http://www.alaskahighway.com address : alaska highway p.o.box 70078 pasadena ca 91117-7078 usa
okay- no hats beyond this point. i cannot stop listening to it. i really really really like it. on the first listen, i went, uhhhm.... but then found it going right back on. then all the songs kept running through me, and continue to do so. how are others feeling about it now that we have all had it for however long it is? it makes me feel really good. a reminder that the doroschuk family produces all the best music for these ears of mine to hear, and for me to experience. most grateful for their existence indeed. :) p.s. that sounds really cool moose what you have goin on, i'll have to check it out! best wishes in your endeavours!

On that note, has everyone read what Stefan wrote on the Cyboard (on the mwh site)? He said the retail version will have all the songs remixed and 7 new ones. He also said that would make the version we have now collectible items :)
If you check out the board more often you will know that Stefan was just being his usual sarcastic self...I think he was serious about the collectors version...only Daniele Rossi <daniele@superspud.com> wrote:> a reminder that the doroschuk family produces all the best music for these

I was wondering just how hard it would be to get a copy of the Freeways live 85 concert tape. I left mine in Montreal with a friend and he is being lazy and won't send it back. the one <theone@purpleforest.net> wrote:don't think the album is good? go get really really high and give the album a re-listen. you will change your mind. and fully appreciate the artwork as well. :) think the lyrics are meaningless? see above. otherwise you just are not in a place where you can recieve the lyrics. they make perfect sense to me, some of the finest yet. everyone else catch the safety dance riff in one of the songs? roses, it was. -rain
