The only plausible explanations for inflicting advanced algebra on unmotivated students are variations on "learning to think". Every tired old bit of curriculum that has died, did so screaming the same thing. As applied, this is pretty much like arguing that beatings are good because they toughen you up.
I say give kids the dragonbox game while they're in elementary school and get the skills ingrained so that when they start thinking about what it means in high school, the skills are all second nature and their brains can concentrate on understanding what's happening rather than the mechanics of it. It's like choral singing: you have to have the words and your part memorized if you're going to be able to watch the director for dynamics.
