[math-fun] CAS on smartphone
A couple of days ago my ten-year old mobe finally died, following which I reluctantly embraced the portable digital age in the form of a modest Android smartphone [8Gb Samsung Core Prime]. What's the prospects for installing a credible CAS on this device? Has anybody out there dipped a toe in this pond? With what outcome? The only realistic candidate so far seems to be Maxima: see https://sites.google.com/site/maximaonandroid/ or maybe JAS (but what happened to Yacas, eh?) http://krum.rz.uni-mannheim.de/jas/ What about SAGE (incl. Maxima & PARI/GP) or Magma? Fred Lunnon

Sage has a big footprint (and already in disk usage, IIRC it's > 1 GB). You are lucky with PARI/GP: http://pari.math.u-bordeaux.fr/download.html and specifically http://pari.math.u-bordeaux.fr/pub/pari/paridroid/PariDroid-2.7.3.1.3.apk should "just work". For me, Pari is enough most of the time and when not, it is usually factorization of multivariate polynomials and symbolic solutions of algebraic equations (that are missing in Pari). Cannot comment about the other systems named. Best regards, jj (Me: proud owner of a dumb-phone; recently I checked: out of about 60 persons in the room I indeed was the only such (apparent) dinosaur.)

I've had some luck using Sage Math Cloud on my iPhone. But maybe you want something that doesn't require an Internet connection. Jim Propp On Sunday, May 24, 2015, Joerg Arndt <arndt@jjj.de> wrote:

Indeed, my intention was to have a standalone backup for use when away from creature comforts such as desktops and reliable cheap broadband. On 5/24/15, James Propp <jamespropp@gmail.com> wrote:
