[math-fun] Linnaean "monomials"
For reasons to emerge, Fred's rhinoceromania led me to ask Corey for examples of Linnaean binomials(!) where genus = species. He promptly found 24 animals at http://www.sporcle.com/games/KyleBarron/same_genus_species , causing me to kick myself for not being able to remember so many of them, including Genetta genetta, mentioned to me by Whit Diffie, who owned a Genetta tigrina. This list must be very incomplete, because I found Gulo gulo before seeing it. But some namesmiths seem to shun these "monomials" for sounding childish or something. E.g., Hydrochoerus hydrochaeris. And whoever named the black rhinoceros was just having fun: diceros bicornis! --rwg May he was seeing double after attempting a cholecystectomy?
Rattus rattus (black rat) springs to mind. * Bill Gosper <billgosper@gmail.com> [Jul 25. 2011 08:45]:

OK, I don't know if this qualifies as "prompt", but here are my results from sweeping the placental mammals. There are 45 of them on my list, so I certainly got some that weren't on that game page. (They had some I didn't, because they didn't confine themselves to the Eutheria. I'm sure there are dozens of others, and I probably even overlooked a couple of eutherians.) Alces (Eurasian elk) Axis (chital) Bison (American bison) Capreolus (western roe deer) Chiropotes (red-backed bearded saki) Cricetus (black-bellied hamster) Crocuta (spotted hyena) Dama (fallow deer) Gazella (mountain gazelle) Genetta (small-spotted genet) Gerbillus (lesser Egyptian gerbil) Glis (fat dormouse) Gorilla (western gorilla) Gulo (wolverine) Hyaena (striped hyena) Indri (indri) Jaculus (lesser Egyptian jerboa) Lagurus (steppe lemming) Lemmus (Norway lemming) Lutra (European river otter) Lynx (Eurasian lynx) Macrophyllum (long-legged bat) Marmota (European marmot) Martes (European pine marten) Meles (Eurasian badger) Mephitis (striped skunk) Molossus (Pallas's mastiff bat) Monachus (Mediterranean monk seal) Mops (Malayan free-tailed bat) Myotis (greater mouse-eared bat) Nasua (ring-tailed coati) Niviventer (white-bellied rat) Oreotragus (klipspringer) Papio (Guinea baboon) Petaurista (red giant flying squirrel) Phocoena (harbor porpoise) Pipistrellus (common pipistrelle) Pithecia (white-faced saki) Rattus (black rat) Redunca (Bohar reedbuck) Rupicapra (chamois) Saccolaimus (naked-rumped pouched bat) Uncia (snow leopard) Vicugna (vicuña) Vulpes (red fox) On Mon, Jul 25, 2011 at 12:05 PM, Allan Wechsler <acwacw@gmail.com> wrote:
