[math-fun] Dots and Triangles
Dots and Boxes is a nice simple children's game, right? Elwyn Berlekamp (the "wyn" in Winning Ways) showed us the surprising depths to this game. Here's a tiny variant on a tiny board; just nine triangles. You get to choose to go first or second. Can you beat it? I'm finding it surprisingly difficult. https://tomas.rokicki.com/dottri.html This should work on your mobile phone too. -tom -- -- http://cube20.org/ -- http://golly.sf.net/ --
Tom, the game as set up isn't fair -- the computer can pass in the middle of the game, and the human can't. I suspect this is a bug. On Tue, Jun 18, 2019 at 5:15 PM Tomas Rokicki <rokicki@gmail.com> wrote:

If anyone else sees this, please open your JavaScript console, cut and paste the game log there, and send it to me. Remember, if you make a triangle, you must move again; it is not optional. The computer's responses are shown in red. The only possible pass is the human (hero) at the very start of the game; the computer should never pass. To start another game just click on the board at the end of the previous game. -tom On Tue, Jun 18, 2019 at 5:43 PM Allan Wechsler <acwacw@gmail.com> wrote:

AHA! I must have spaced out about the obligatory extra move after scoring. Let me try again. Sorry for the false alarm. On Tue, Jun 18, 2019 at 8:56 PM Tomas Rokicki <rokicki@gmail.com> wrote:

Not at all; I'm happy to hear someone is even trying it! I'm honored that you are playing this simple hack of mine. -tom On Tue, Jun 18, 2019 at 5:57 PM Allan Wechsler <acwacw@gmail.com> wrote:

But the computer doesn't have to move again(?). Brent

Oh, the computer has to move again if it makes a triangle, and all its moves will be in red so it should be pretty easy to see what the computer did, where it made triangles and what that last move is that didn't make a triangle. Very nice game! After losing many, I won twice, but can’t repeat it. It seems the program does not go for a maximum score, only for a (random?) win, thus making it hard to learn its strategy. — Mike

Nice game, but it would be nice to have an “undo” to be able to analyze it easier. I can see a bad move quickly, but not before I’ve made it, and I’m too lazy to tak e notes. Stan Isaacs Sent from my iPad
