[math-fun] ear-mathematicians and eye-mathematicians
Can anyone provide a source or quote for the dichotomy between "ear-mathematicians" (algebraists) and "eye-mathematicians" (geometers)? I tried Google, but had no luck. Thanks, Jim Propp
Mmm ... What about analysts --- "ass-mathematicians"? [No, really --- some of my best friends are analysts. Well, were, anyway ... ] WFL On 6/15/16, James Propp <jamespropp@gmail.com> wrote:

I hadn't thought of mathematicians as belonging to that dichotomy, but many have agreed there are both "gooey" and "crunchy" ones (maybe with a big overlap). Meaning like geometers and topologists versus algebraists and combinatorists. —Dan

hmmm there's an opportunity to catalog mathematician dichotomies here. there's freeman dyson's birds and frogs, described for example here https://www.quora.com/Why-is-Alexander-Grothendieck-revered-by-mathematician... On Wed, Jun 15, 2016 at 6:46 PM, Dan Asimov <asimov@msri.org> wrote:
