From the ASME (Mechanical Engineering???):
"Carter began his career as a nuclear engineer after receiving a B.S. degree from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1946 and undertaking graduate work in nuclear physics at Union College. He served as a submariner and worked on the Navy's nuclear submarine program."
