They are fine with me, but the problem is 9 7/33 means 9+7/33 or means 9*7/33? In elementary school they mean the former and in college they mean the latter. -- Warren D. Smith http://RangeVoting.org <-- add your endorsement (by clicking "endorse" as 1st step)
I've never seen anyone write 9 7/33 to mean 9 * 7/33. 9(7/33) maybe, and 9x (where x = 7/33) definitely, But 9 7/33 Never. Can you find any source anywhere which shows an integer, immediately followed by a fraction, with no punctuation, which intends this as multiplication? That's a curious and interesting point. In math, juxtaposition usually means multiplication, but can mean addition (3 1/2) or in some countries, can mean digit separators (3 433 for 3,433). It can also mean function application (sin theta). I'm sure there's numerous uses I'm omitting. -tom On topic, one might be tempted to paraphrase a line from Airplane: "I like my fractions like my women: improper." but it's not clear that's entirely proper for this forum.
