Here's a math non-fun question (but I'm not sure whom to ask, so I'm asking y'all): Is there a way to do half-decent-looking integrals and summations in Word? I'd like to get things to look like / 1 \ f(x) dx / 0 and -- 100 \ / n(n+1) -- n=1 as opposed to / 1 \ f(x) dx / 0 and -- 100 \ / n(n+1) -- n=1 A quick Google search didn't turn up anything helpful. Thanks, Jim Propp

This doesn't address your inquiry directly, but I recently loaded OpenOffice onto my laptop and it, too, has an equation editor (which I needed to use). It was pretty nice: you select "Insert/Object/Equation" and you get a split-screen: in the bottom you put the equation (you type things like "{x+1} over {y sub n}") and it gets formatted into the doc as you type, so you can tune it and tweak it easily. There's an equation editor in the more recent versions of Word (I haven't seen anything between 97 and 07, but I think even 97 had one that worked separately, and 07 has one nicely built in). Insert-->Equation (or possibly Insert--> Object--> Microsoft Equation, depending on the edition) gives some pretty nice typesetting options. --Emma James Propp wrote:

You can also use various online apps to tex an equation into an image suitable for inclusion in a Word doc. -- Mike Stay - metaweta@gmail.com http://math.ucr.edu/~mike http://reperiendi.wordpress.com
