Re: [math-fun] |A|+|B|=|C|
Is there a mathematical grift along the lines of the missing dollar riddle?: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Missing_dollar_riddle I get the feeling I’ve seen such a thing in a movie, or maybe an Abbot and Costello routine. I thought I might find what I’m looking for in “Paper Moon”, but I could only find a clip showing a two-person con involving a marked $20 bill. Jim Propp
I don’t remember an Abbott and Costello routine on the missing dollar, but do remember fondly the many times they showed that 7*13=28 by screwing with positional notation. I play this for any class I teach where positional notation or base conversion is a thing, so mostly numerical methods or math history classes. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xkbQDEXJy2k Steve On Sep 5, 2020, at 2:08 PM, James Propp <jamespropp@gmail.com<mailto:jamespropp@gmail.com>> wrote: Is there a mathematical grift along the lines of the missing dollar riddle?: https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__en.wikipedia.org_wiki_M... Found it: https://youtu.be/6xHlU7si5ws I just learned that the con has a name (“change raising”) and there are a number of good videos explaining it. Jim Propp On Sat, Sep 5, 2020 at 2:08 PM James Propp <jamespropp@gmail.com> wrote:

I also found images of three towns that have humorous welcome signs that list the town's elevation, population, and year of establishment, along with the total of those three numbers. Gold Hill, Colorado: https://www.reddit.com/r/Colorado/comments/da5qa7/this_sign_in_gold_hill_co/ Snowmass, Colorado: https://www.aspensojo.com/news-and-profiles/2018/06/snowmass-village-revamps... New Cuyama, California: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:New_cuyama.jpg I recall seeing a cartoon along these lines (maybe a Gary Larson "The Far Side" cartoon) on this theme many, many years ago. Is this a case of art imitating life, life imitating art, or art and life independently converging? Jim Propp On Sat, Sep 5, 2020 at 3:06 PM James Propp <jamespropp@gmail.com> wrote:
