[math-fun] Schroeppel wins national contest, starting top journalist's career :)
Seems one of the earliest stories by later-famous investigative reporter Seymour M. Hersh was about Richard C. Schroeppel winning a nationwide math exam contest at age 16 in 1964. Hersh moved on from this initial triumph to become probably the greatest (or certainly one of the few best) investigative reporters of the 20th century... -- Warren D. Not THE Richard C. Schroeppel, that odd and quirky character who liked the Beatles and girls??!! I always wondered what became of him, he was sooooooooo cute! Hilarie

I first heard of Rich when shortly after I'd decided to attend MIT, my uncle sent me a newspaper clipping about the same person, who lived in some obscure midwest city, had won the MAA math contest and was also going to MIT. It might have been my very first evening at MIT, the week before freshman classes began, that I met this person amid the funky furnishings of the MITSFS. --Dan On Oct 27, 2014, at 2:46 PM, Hilarie Orman <ho@alum.mit.edu> wrote:
