If you would be willing to sign a letter in support of the worth of his work, please me a short note with your name and email address, as I am collecting a list of names for him. If you are unfamiliar with his work, see http://www.helasculpt.com/ and if you wish to contact Helaman directly, his email address is helamanf@helasculpt.com George http://www.georgehart.com/ http://www.cs.sunysb.edu/~george/ Helaman Rolfe Pratt Ferguson <helamanf@helasculpt.com> wrote:
Dear George,
Thank you for your interest and sympathy. Life down here is getting seriously interesting, I will keep your offer in mind. Can you put together say a couple of dozen people? I don't know what form the "go on the record in support of" would take, but it might be helpful. I have been getting some local political support but I don't know how stable such verbal support is. The Washington Post will probably do a follow-up, especially if the new developer continues with his court eviction proceedings or some other disaster for me, and a body of national support may help a lot.
Yours truly,
Helaman

Helaman,
I'm sorry to hear of your situation; I just read of your eviction in the Washington Post. (A friend sent me this URL: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A43083-2002Dec11.html
Being off in NY and not wealthy, I doubt I can do much, but if I can help in any way, I'd be happy to. Lacking the obvious form of help, (megabucks) what I could do is try to get some people to sign a petition if you had a letter you wanted sent to someone. Many people I know would be happy to go on the record in support of the worth of what you do.

Prof. Hart: I am pleased to lend my moral support to Helaman Ferguson in his current dilemma. Dr. Ferguson is a singular individual, truly a national treasure. First of all, he is a first-rate mathematician -- his PSLQ algorithm was recently named one of ten "algorithms of the century" by the publication Computing in Science and Engineering. Much of the current flurry of activity in experimental and computational mathematics, which is destined to play a major role in future mathematical research, is based on the PSLQ algorithm and related techniques. Secondly, Ferguson is a gifted sculptor. His mathematics-inspired sculptures are artistic achievements of the first rank, expressing some of the most exalted achievements of human mind with the stunning tactile beauty of sculpture. His artwork will continue to be appreciated centuries from now, after much of what passes for art today has been tossed in the trash. Please lend my support to any reasonable measures that can be taken to provide a suitable venue for him to continue his sculpture work. DHB David H Bailey "Computo ergo sum."
