[math-fun] Math collaboration over distances
The biggest thing I miss when trying to collaborate on math research with someone who's elsewhere is the ability for us to see what each other is writing, such as on a blackboard or pad. No doubt this has long since been technnologically possible, but such technology is certainly not widely distributed. Can people suggest reliable low-cost solutions? --Dan Those who sleep faster get more rest.

I use the video chat in GMail with the built-in webcam on my laptop and a whiteboard. I find freehand drawing using a mouse to be horribly awkward. I suppose if I had a large-enough touch screen (like an ipad or an android tablet) or a wacom pen tablet, input wouldn't be a problem and I could use any of the zillions of free, ad-supported online shared whiteboard apps. -- Mike Stay - metaweta@gmail.com http://www.cs.auckland.ac.nz/~mike http://reperiendi.wordpress.com
Skype can work reasonably well. You can sometimes just hold up a sheet of paper to the camera, but if there's something more complex, you can switch the video to sharing a piece of your computer desktop, then switch back when you're done. Bill On Dec 16, 2010, at 2:18 PM, Dan Asimov wrote:
