Re: [math-fun] Distance ratio question
David, Thanks for your info re the two circle-packing problems. This is tricky stuff; it seemed like there was a simple argument showed they are equivalent. As for your problem with getting your posts posted in math-fun, the person to contact about that is Rich at <rschroe@sandia.gov>, who is the list's founder and manager. Good luck. --Dan _____________________________________________________________________ "It don't mean a thing if it ain't got that certain je ne sais quoi." --Peter Schickele
Minor historical correction ... I didn't start the math-fun list. It was started within Symbolics (c. 1990?). I took it over around 1992, and moved it to cs.arizona.edu. People inside Symbolics get the startup credit. Gosper? Rich ---------------- Quoting Dan Asimov <dasimov@earthlink.net>:

I think earlier. Unfortunately, a lot of my old mail got left on Macsyma Inc's main file server when I hastily departed.

The only moderator I remember is Allan Wechsler. --rwg PS, Thanks to Jason for pointing out that someone named redmartian has YouTubed my Vintage Computer Festival talk: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BpgA2oCQj9o (et 5 seq) (audio is marginal--nil at the end.)

I only fired this up out of curiosity to see what the legendary RWG actually looks like --- and when I next looked up, an hour-and-a half had disappeared down the youtube. Very dangerous stuff! WFL
I'm pretty sure I started math-fun, as a Symbolics-internal mailing list, sometime in the early 80's. I remember having a discussion with some manager about whether it would be OK to open it to outside subscribers. Somebody else managed it for a little while between my tenure and Rich's.
