[math-fun] Atle Selberg
I noticed a long obit in the Los Angeles Times last week for Atle Selberg, who provided the first(*) elementary proof of the Prime Number Theorem. http://www.latimes.com/news/printedition/california/la-me-selberg22aug22 ,1,4873005.story?coll=la-headlines-pe-california free, short: http://www.norwaypost.no/cgi-bin/norwaypost/imaker?id=96351 Rich ----- * Modulo a priority dispute with Erdos.
It would be interesting to see how many other US newspapers mentioned his death. Random guess: none. Anyone? Steve Gray Schroeppel, Richard wrote:

http://news.google.com/news?q=Atle+Selberg ...actually shows eight distinct stories, including ones in the NYTimes and Washington Post. What fame! --Michael Kleber -- It is very dark and after 2000. If you continue you are likely to be eaten by a bleen.
And today (Sept 24th) he made it into the obituary pages of no less than the (ex Manchester) Guardian (having succumbed on Aug 6th): better --- uh --- later than late. Doesn't seem likely that many mathematicians would have have their obits ready written for them, thinking about it. WFL On 8/30/07, Michael Kleber <michael.kleber@gmail.com> wrote:
