I really wish certain people could restrain themselves from promulgating their political views on this list. I subscribe because it occasionally has interesting math, but I'll unsubscribe in an instant if this degenerates into mindless attacks on liberals or conservatives. By the way, wasn't Petr Beckmann the crackpot who claimed relativity was a hoax? Jeffrey Shallit

I don't know about that, but he wrote the book "A History of pi", which (to my surprise) had some political statements in it (IIRC).

Yes, in his later years Petr Beckmann became an anti-relativity crusader. When visiting Beckmann in Boulder, I tried to steer him to the right path, but I grossly underestimated the futility of such an endeavor. This aspect of Beckmann's legacy survives at http://www.galileanelectrodynamics.com/ But "Health Hazards" speaks for itself. If you take a position on the divisive issue of nuclear safety, then you will either love the book or hate it. This side of his legacy lives on at http://www.accesstoenergy.com/ Beckmann defected from communist Czechoslovakia, and became a professor of elecrical engineering at the University of Colorado. He authored many fine technical books. Gene __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! Hotjobs: Enter the "Signing Bonus" Sweepstakes http://hotjobs.sweepstakes.yahoo.com/signingbonus
