Re: [math-fun] Mandelbrot set history (Byte magazine September 1984) (was Re: Mandelbrot set question)
I just don't remember, but was the Mandelbrot set not in either of his two books "Fractals: Form, Chance, and Dimension" (1977), or "The Fractal Geometry of Nature" (1982) ??? --Dan Robert M. wrote: << For those who are interested, I found those first Mandelbrot set images from Byte magazine September 1984. . . .

Despite cutting out most of the images in the book, this page preview does show Mandelbrot-like bulbs across the top and makes reference to both the lambda and mandelbrot iterations in the text. http://books.google.com/books?id=0R2LkE3N7-oC&lpg=PP1&dq=%22fractal%20geomet... Yes, the Mandelbrot set is shown in Mandelbrot's 1982 book -- but Byte magazine and Scientific American had much greater exposure with the type of people who had both the interest and the ability to create images of the Mandelbrot set. And perhaps more importantly, they give the algorithms directly and explicitly, something that Mandelbrot's terse and cryptic treatment does not.
