Apparently, the first generation ("Population III") stars formed quite quickly & died almost as quickly (3-5 Myears). As I recall, I was surprised to find that the first stars died in less time than it took the Earth's Moon to form & get a stable orbit (perhaps 150 Myears). Obviously, these stars are not the oldest, since they contain iron that came from still-older stars -- but they come close to being first generation.
