Very thoughtful and approachable recent explanatory survey at Shuang-Nan Zhang Astrophysical Black Holes in the Physical Universe http://arxiv.org/pdf/1003.0291v3.pdf I particularly appreciated the punchy discussion on page 7 (#169) of practical criteria for deciding whether to accept a theoretical model of a physical observation.
