I got to thinking about what this has to do with the Mathieu equation. I guess that it has to do with the band edges: the place where the cosine in that trace formula is +1 or -1 is when the phase shift across the unit cell is zero or 180 degrees; and the Brillouin zone boundaries tell where you can get reflection from the differently oriented crystal planes, so it would be pretty much the same thing. - hvm ------------------------------------------------- www.correo.unam.mx UNAMonos Comunicándonos
