[math-fun] ear-mathematicians and eye-mathematicians

Can anyone provide a source or quote for the dichotomy between "ear-mathematicians" (algebraists) and "eye-mathematicians" (geometers)? I tried Google, but had no luck. Thanks, Jim Propp
