Sticky Towers of Hanoi was apparently invented by John Conway, while attending a Combinatorial Theory Workshop held at "BIRS" (Berkeley?) in June 2005, and attended by (amongst others) Richard Guy and (Thane?) Plambeck [we know what you did last summer].
