I had a different idea for "random chess". The game is played with the same equipment as chess. White and Black start with all pieces (construed to include pawns) of their color in their respective draw pile. White and Black take alternating turns as in chess. In his turn, a player must either 1. Place any piece from his draw pile on any open square in one of his first four ranks: - A player must place his king on his first move. - A player may place a pawn on his first rank. 2. Move any piece on the board according to the rules of chess with the following amendments: - Long pawn moves, en passant captures, and castling are not permitted. Once a player's draw pile is exhausted, he must move a piece on his turn. Capturing, pawn promotion, check, checkmate, and stalemate are as in chess with the following amendments: - En passant capture is not permitted. - Captured pieces are not returned to their player's draw pile, they are out of the game. - A player may place a piece to block check or forestall stalemate. If this game doesn't have a fatal strategic flaw, I think the freeform placement of pieces would lead to a much different type of game.

Does the following form of chess have a name?
The game consists of 2 phases:
Phase 1. Both players conspire to move their pieces in such a way to get ready for phase 2, but there are _no_ captures allowed in phase 1. (As usual, the king cannot move into check, and must immediately move out of check.)
Phase 2. The only moves allowed are _captures_, so each move has to set up (or at least not remove the possibility) for the other side to also capture. The game ends with both sides having only their king left, hence it is a draw.
I got the idea for this game after listening to a description of WWI, so I would call it WWI "massacre" chess.
