Yes, the Mandelbrot set is shown in Mandelbrot's 1982 book -- but Byte magazine and Scientific American had much greater exposure with the type of people who had both the interest and the ability to create images of the Mandelbrot set. And perhaps more importantly, they give the algorithms directly and explicitly, something that Mandelbrot's terse and cryptic treatment does not.
