As others have noted, this site does not use Java. It uses JavaScript. Most web sites rely on it these days. If you have disabled it, just re-enable it. JavaScript is not a plugin, but is built directly into the browser. As such, it has direct access to the DOM for the web page, which a plugin does not. Java and JavaScript have no direct relationship. The name JavaScript was merely a regrettable last-minute marketing choice made by NetScape. Tom Zak Seidov via math-fun writes:
