Minuscule point: It seems to me that in Knuth's response to Luschny, he writes cos(pi s) where he means to write cos(2pi s).
He probably uses the New Convention privately and missed translating. Wouldn't a LaTeX macro handle all this? Write once, typeset in either Convention. And not just on paper: with online versions there would be a button to view either way.
