Hello, yes, I forgot to say, the distribution of numbers is sequential but national, there are no local effect on numbers, you could be in paris as well as Lille or Marseille would not change the effect of randomness. I estimated the number of foreign or ancient numbering system to about 1/10, 10% of the plates are either with the old numbering system or a foreign plate. Trucks, motorcycles and cars are all with the same numbers. I think there is a bias with the new ones, there is a tendency of having new plates more than older ones, this too cannot be explained easily. Finaly , I wanted to settle the thing by a real experiment , being on one place with good circulation of vehicles and doing the statistics myself, but this is a little extreme. Still, I can't find a valid explanation. Maybe, the new cars or vehicles are making more road than older ones. You have to change the plate if you move from one department to another but once you move, they give you a number which is now national, there are no departments anymore, this means once you get your number it stays with the car until the car is retired or removed from circulation. Re-enforcing the fact that at any one point on the road, you could encounter any number from AA nnn LL to CZ nnn LL, where nnn is from 001 to 999 and LL being AA to ZZ. with the exception that there are no I O or U's. I think I will do it myself and obtain a statistics with 1 camera fixed at one point on the road and settle this thing once and for all. ! ... Best regards, Simon Plouffe
