[math-fun] equations in websites and email

I occasionally run into something like this: $$(a + b)^{3} = a^{3} + 3a^{2}b + 3ab^{2} + b^{3}$$ I vaguely recognize as being TeX math-mode or something like that. Is there a way to *see* the equation if you get one in an email or run into on a web site?
