Did you look at the book "The Black Hole War: My Battle with Stephen Hawking to Make the World Safe for Quantum Mechanics", by Leonard Susskind? It talks about this, and says Hawking agreed with his (Susskind's) solution eventually. If I understand correctly, Susskind says the information is on the surface of the black hole, not inside it, and talks about the holographic universe. I looked through quite a few papers that tried to solve the Hawking information-loss puzzle and the one I liked the best was this one: http://arxiv.org/abs/hep-th/0507287
