Hello, I had a correspondant lately, he was sending a proof of the trisection of the angle. The sketches were done by hand. He sent his drawings to known mathematicians like Waldschmidt and other number theorists. <we> politely answered to him that it was proven impossible more than 100 years ago. The excuse he was giving was that he was an old man and he passed most of his pasttime doing just that, refining the same false arguments. I suggested him to look at other things like the Viete construction that lead the way to infinite series for the computation of pi and such things. He refused to consider the arguments even if all the books he can find about it are all saying the same thing. ... that he was to old to consider anything else. I even received a letter from his daughter, trying to excuse her father of being so persistent to all the people he was sending that same mail all the time. I must have been the last person that answered him. Now and then, everytime he is sending anything (which is always the same), I just put the mail to the garbage. This was not the first time it happened. There was a constant error they were doing : They just don't understand what is a finite construction with the ruler and compass. That if they can construct something that get close to a known value like pi, they can continue like that with the process, ad infinitum and that proves the argument. Simon Plouffe
