First, let me apologise for my previous 'group' - I should have said 'multiplicative group of positive rationals less than or equal to 1'. Second, the answer to my original question, does x/y = a/b + c/d always have a solution, can be written as; Does there always exist, for any x and y, a partition bd of ky for some k such that kx = ad+bc for some positive integers a and c?
