Isn't there an anthropic principle explanation here? To wit: the reason our universe hasn't been annihilated yet is that if it had, we wouldn't be around to ask why it hadn't. This is not a comforting option, if one considers its implications for what's likely to happen a second from now. And, if we live so long, a second after that. And a second after that. Etc.
