One difference between Gathering for Gardner and the World Science Fiction Convention is that at least in principle, everyone who attends the Gathering for Gardner can give a talk to all the other participants. It’s not clear to me that this could continue to be the case if the number of participants increased (unless the duration increased too, which would be good in some ways but bad in others). I’ve never felt entirely comfortable with the by-invitation-only character of G4G. Also, they could probably run the whole thing more cheaply if they didn’t hold it at the Ritz-Carlton! I’m hoping that some of these vestiges of G4G-as-“Old-Boys’-Club” will fade as new people come into the organization. Jim Propp On Tuesday, April 10, 2018, Keith F. Lynch <kfl@keithlynch.net> wrote:
Not me, though I'd like to.
Please have the people in charge ask the people who run the annual World Science Fiction Convention on how the latter manage to put on an event that lasts twice as long for half the price with no membership limit.
