Is there a way to do half-decent-looking integrals and summations in Word?
This doesn't address your inquiry directly, but I recently loaded OpenOffice onto my laptop and it, too, has an equation editor (which I needed to use). It was pretty nice: you select "Insert/Object/Equation" and you get a split-screen: in the bottom you put the equation (you type things like "{x+1} over {y sub n}") and it gets formatted into the doc as you type, so you can tune it and tweak it easily.
