I thought OEIS A260482, A260747..A260750 completely described the (initial) Dragon triple points, all of which have preimages a(n)/15/2^k. But I just noticed an editor's remark that there is another infinite family of the form a(n)/7/2^k. These are much less "photogenic" than the old set (e.g. gosper.org/dragtrip!.png) <http://gosper.org/dragtrip!.png> because two preimages always(?) differ by 2/7/2^k, and ~75% of them have the 3rd preimage within 4/7/2^k. But they can get "arbitrarily" lopsided: In[508]:= undrag[(69 + 27 I)/160] Out[508]= {1539/3584, 2551/3584, 2553/3584} (Differences presumably limited to 40%.) Also, Julian has privately remarked that there are no irrational triple points. --rwg

I bought a vintage Hi-Q set for my family a few weeks ago: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peg_solitaire Now that I'll be spending lots of time at home with my kids, I'm thinking that there should be some good activities we could do with it. Any ideas? I know that Berlekamp-Conway-Guy has a section on this, and maybe it even explains how to win, but I don't want to just see the answer; I'd like a "curriculum" that'll Socratically guide me and my kids towards the solution. (Or is it the sort of puzzle where you basically need to use a brute-force approach?) I kind of like the fact that I don't know the solution; it puts me and my kids more on the same level. Jim Propp

Unary map: u: D->D with u(d)=dHHVV, where dinD 2. Binary map: D imes D -> D with d_1 * d_2 = d_1 HHHH d_2 VVVV, where d_1,d_2in D. 3. Norm: || d|| = (total number of steps in d )/4 +1 4. The generator is the zero step path (or single vertex). The norm is a size function which has to be “additive”: ||u(d)||=||d||+1 and ||d_1 * d_2|| = ||d_1 ||+|| d_2||. This is straightforward to show using the above three definitions. The images of the two maps have to be disjoint (clearly the case: the former end on HHVV and the latter VVVV). If the path end VVVV then the last HHHH sequence (certain to exist) uniquely defines the two sub-paths. Every HE-Dyck path is one of the above to cases except for the zero step path. The isomorphism defines the bijection which is also recursive. Dear Math Fun, My Rutgers colleague Vladimir Retakh ( vretakh(a)math.rutgers.edu) has a question about Motzkin numbers; He asks: I consider Dyck paths on the integer grid from (0,0) to (n,n) consisting of zigzags with horizontal and vertical segments and staying below the diagonal x=y. I claim that the number of such paths with horizontal segments of length non-equal to 3, 5, 7, ... (odd numbers greater than 1) is equal to the n-th Motzkin numbers. May I have a reference confirming this statement? Me: The literature about these numbers is huge (see https://oeis.org/A001006, which is about the second-biggest entry after the Catalan numbers). Can someone help Professor Retakh with a reference or proof?
