[math-fun] towers of Hanoi

The recursive solution to the Towers of Hanoi is well known. Here is a puzzle which a friend of mine and I found more challenging than we thought at first: give an _iterative_ algorithm, i.e., one which has no memory, and chooses its next move based only on the current state of the puzzle (and perhaps the knowledge of the initial and final peg for the entire stack of disks). Hint: first come up with an iterative algorithm for the Gray code. - Cris p.s. The Santa Fe Institute has a copy of the French recreational mathematics magazine where Edouard Lucas proposed the Towers of Hanoi puzzle (he also, confusingly, mentions Benares). I like to point out that if a Vietnamese mathematician had invented the puzzle, it would presumably be called the Towers of Eiffel.

As in the case of the two previous short pieces I posted, this piece will live two lives: first as a short Big Internet Math-Off pitch, then as a longer Mathematical Enchantments essay. There's plenty of time for you to send me feedback that'll affect the latter version, since that won't be going out until late 2019; but the BIMO pitch needs to be sent to Christian Lawson-Perfect by the 13th, so that he can post it early on the 15th. At Sparse Ruler Conjecture I've posted the Sparse Ruler conjecture. Sparse Ruler Conjecture: If a minimal sparse ruler of length n has m marks, then m-⌈sqrt(3×n+9/4)⌋ ∈ (0,1). I just made an improvement to the list there. One length 188 ruler has gaps as: {0, 1, 2, 3, 5, 12, 21, 30, 47, 64, 81, 98, 115, 132, 148, 149, 156, 164, 172, 180, 185, 186, 187, 188} {1, 1, 1, 2, 7, 9, 9, 17, 17, 17, 17, 17, 17, 16, 1, 7, 8, 8, 8, 5, 1, 1, 1} This expands into a new record setting ruler of length 239.
