EMI uses Cactus Data Shield copy protection for their discs. It's quite effective: only one of five checked PC optical drives managed to read them correctly (= I was able to exctract the contents). You have to check by yourself if your CD/DVD-ROM is able to handling such "cactus" protected discs. My: TDK's CyClone 48/24/48B can do this, as well as 2x speed TDK's DVD-R/RW writer. My older TDK drive, Pioneer DVD-ROM and new Plextor PX-116A DVD-ROM are also unable to read such discs.
The TdF albums sold by play.com dont have copy protection. Reasonable prices and free shipping makes this a no-brainer if you worry about the copy protection. glenn

mmhh... are you sure ?? ? if yes, do you mean that an official non-"copy controlled" edition of the album is available ? Maybe, perhaps, _ /o o\ Filtre4Pole \ ~ / I I - -

I am sure. I looked at the CD in a shop in Norway and it had all the copy prevention symbols and marks, whereas my copy bought from play.com only has this message printed in the tray inlay card: "Thank you for buying this music and for supporting the artists, songwriters, musicians and others who've created it and made it possible. Please remember that this recording and artwork are protected by copyright law. Since you don't own the copyright, it's not yours to distribute. Please don't use internet services that promote the illegal distribution of copyrighted music, give away illegal copies of discs or lend discs to others for copying. It's hurting the artists who created the music. It has the same effect as stealing the disc from a store without paying for it. Applicable laws provide severe civil and criminal penalties for the unauthorized reproduction, distribution and digital transmission of copyrighted sound recordings." glenn

...yes, and that's exactly the same in 'my' "copy controlled" edition + "to find legal downloads visit www.musicfromemi.com" (is the map laying there too ??) and the catalog number is ?? Maybe, perhaps, _ /o o\ Filtre4Pole \ ~ / I I - -

OK, but that doesnt mean it's the same edition anyway.

Yes

591 708 2 I assure you, the CD I saw in the shop had a whole section of the backside devoted to copy control information. It listed systems it would/should play good on, and mentioned "May not play on all CD players" or something like that. My copy that I got from play.com does NOT have this. glenn
This is how it seems to me... The German pressing (591 710 2) has the copy protection, the UK pressing (591 708 2) does not. You can tell them apart quite easily: the German edition has the copy protection info in a white box at the top right of the CD rear, the UK one does not. There is also a sticker on the front of the German version with the Copy Control logo. (Note that both versions have the "support the artists" spiel on the inner tray - this is not the same thing). Another difference is that the German pressing has additional PC and Mac apps on the CD for automatic playback without any additional software; presumably to get around the fact that some computers must have difficulty reading the table of contents. I have to say though, that this copy protection is pretty crap - I can quite easily rip the files into AAC/mp3/AIF/WAVs using the bog standard iTunes app on the Mac, no devious measures needed. What the protection does seem to be better at, however, is preventing digital copies by SPDIF output. It was exactly the same with the German and UK single CD pressings too. I guess it all boils down to which pressings have been imported to where. Staggboy

Probably, the American pressing, ASW 91708, is not copy-controlled either, since it matches the UK pressing's catalog number. Supposedly, the album's due here next Tuesday!!!! Peace.

Indeed (read below) ;-)

Not the same ! the "copy controlled" edition I was talking about has number 591 710 2 (it's the edition distributed in France) Since I know two major editions ( 5917102 / 5917082 ) exist, I was still wondering if any (slight) difference (like languages, the centenary ed. TdF map inside, etc...) exists between them... Considering what you tell (thanks!), *the* difference could be the 'copy controlled-or-not' fact. Maybe, perhaps, _ /o o\ Filtre4Pole \ ~ / I I - -
