Metropolis in Filmmuseum (for the Dutch only)
The Filmmuseum in Amsterdam shows Fritz Lang classics from March 7 - May 1st. A new, "digitally restored" Metropolis shows tomorrow (19:15) last time, with live music. 147 minutes. http://www.filmmuseum.nl Sorry to mention this so late, I was too busy having lots of sex. Saw the newly restored Metropolis today. Not with the original music by Huppertz, but with live music played on piano, guitar, tape and various wind instruments (sax like). There were bits of Varese's Poeme Electronique and Ionisations. Especially the piano was played in many ways, even softly with drum sticks. Oh, and bits of radio static and shortwave sounds with a small radio. Quite nice! The only shortcoming is that they didn't do anything with the sirens, that appear three times or more! There were quite some scenes shown that I didn't remember from the previous time I saw the film, on German tv. Like, the scene in the Club of the Sons was longer, and even more embarrassing. The images of the city and the inside decors are still as impressive (to me) as before, but the story and especially the (over)acting have gone quite stale. I've seen enough of Freder running around, head first, for many years. The last half hour there even were bouts of laughter in the audience when Rotwang is chasing Maria on the roof of the cathedral, running up stairs, sliding down the roof, and dropping to his death. Fredersen holding his head (hair) for at least 5 minutes did not make a favourable impression either. Apparently this kind of theatrical acting is not something people like any more. Personally I was quite irritated too by the strong religious references. What's the pentagram doing all over Rotwang's house by the way...? How long is it?
That's a rather personal question, sir? Oh, eh, 147 minutes. Rick Jansen -- Web: http://www.euronet.nl/~rja/ email: rja@euronet.nl Any spam mail sent to me results in counter measures.
