Let's hope Ralf Huetter has no bicycle accident like in 1983... Gruesse aus Wien, Georgie -> "Yippee-ki-yay, motherfucker!" ( John McClane / 'Die Hard')

Does anyone have a link to the new track, which has not this radio moderator in the beginning and is in STEREO ??? The download all are talking about is MONO! This caused phase-interferations (don't know the englisch word for Phasenauslöschung) at the bassdrum...

Hey all, There's a tour de france flash page at Astralwerks with a clip of a different track (etape?) than what's been circulating in mp3 format... And happily it sounds at least marginally more interesting than the other one (like it's got something resembling an actual melody line for a second!) http://www.astralwerks.com/kraftwerk/tour_de_france.html -martin

oh yes, I prefer this one. sounds great!
Ah... THAT'S the version I heard on Mark & Lard on BBC Radio 1... I reckon that must be Etape 3. It's not so very different from Etape 2 though, is it? Sonically it has very similar elements, same tempo, same drums, same filtered stab sound even though it plays a different riff. I guess all 3 "Stages" must ultimately play together as one piece? Has anyone got hold of the promo CD yet? On Friday, June 27, 2003, at 10:52 PM, Martin Olson wrote:

Don't be superstitious, it brings bad luck ;)

With stars world famous in France (cf Ernst Lubitsch, To be or not to be) like Obispo, Pagny and others, how do you want them to be interested into german electronic cyborgs? ;) French TV wise, the only people interested into K must be on ARTE :-/ or on cable TV... Myself I don't want to suffer the whole show, the VCR will look forward for it. I can't stand the guests, the host and the purpose. Add the mayor of Paris (he may well be there too, it's in front of the city hall) and you have an idea of my kind of disgust. Now I will look on the TV newspaper ;) Denis U] ================================================ lepetitmartien M.I.C. http://www.macmusic.org
Well, now I have it! :) For you who doubted, the CD-S promo for sale by that shop in the UK I mentioned earlier is indeed the full 4-track CD-S! My first impressions: Etappe 1-3 are all pretty similar, and I'd say they together make up one track. For those of you who heard the radio sample of Etappe 2, you know what to expect; it's just more of it. Additionally, Long Version is just that, a long version of the same track. Sound-wise, it's really good. The sound quality is very sharp, with a nice groovy bass. I'm quite sure this will sound fabulous in a club, and I think it's safe to say we're going to get a host of club mixes of this track. Basically it's four tracks built on just one beat. There is no melody to speak of, and overall very little that makes you remember what you've been listening to. This is not catchy stuff that you sing along to. It all kind of reminds me of a trance song that never really takes off, if you know what I mean. We're stuck with the intro. Any studio professional would be able to come up with similar tracks in a matter of hours, I'm sure of it. This is what makes me sad.. Where's the imagination, guys?? Expo was much better than this. Having listened through the full CD, one is left with the thoughts: "Yeah? And?". I hardly remember what I have listened to, and that's really not a good sign. Rating: 2-/5 Cheers, Peo
Thought I'd stick my 2 Euros-worth in with an alternative opinion to Per's (hope you don't mind Per!) who seems pretty disappointed with the single, and must be causing some distress among the mailing list veterans who haven't heard it, and have been waiting years for some new KW stuff! I have to say... I really like it... it sounds exactly like Kraftwerk... and what more can a sad old fan like myself want, really? I think there are two things that you just have to accept about them these days: 1. They will never ever be as ground breaking as they once were. They're using exactly the same kit as every other electronic musician these days (in whose evolution they did at least have a hand in over the last 20 years) - how can they? 2. Likewise, they will never make a massive, heavy, club anthem. Sure, their music is informed by dance culture (in which they also had a hand in the evolution of too), but hopefully it stands up for itself outside that genre. In that respect, surely it's a little more timeless I think. The 3 "Etape"s do pretty much run together as one piece. Very Kraftwerkian, if you think about it... Boing Boom Tschak -Techno Pop - Musique Non Stop... ?: Version 1 is the one from the Astralwerks Flash page. LIght and spacious, a little bit abstract-sounding, but it does have that nice string motif that adds to the mood, and for me it conjures up exactly an image of the cyclists heading out through those mountain passes the band seem to like so much, all bright sunshine and optimism. Version 2 is the familiar "radio" rip. After Version 1, it actually sounds like something of a moment when it kicks off - definitely the most commercial piece. KW are obviously very fond of this filtered stab sound, having already used it on "Expo" and "Airwaves/Tango". One thing I'm personally not so keen on is the resonant/distorted delay they use so heavily. However trendy, this kind of distortion just doesn't seem to sit in Kraftwerk's music to me. Version 3 is my favourite, and I suspect will be many other fans' too, sounding more like classic Kraftwerk to me. Quite minimal and hypnotic, even a touch of "Home Computer" in there perhaps. Various bleeps and bloops pan around and are delayed, and a couple of neat little rhythmic devices move in and out of the mix. Much more contemporary sounding than Version 2, it could be something on Warp Records even. Looking forward to the longer version on the album... And even the "Long Distance Version 2" does not disappoint me at all! There's quite a bit more to it than the edit, including a nice mellow intro, differently-treated vocoder/robovox, and further rhythmic details later on. Can't help thinking they've made the edit a bit too featureless, in fact. I urge everyone to go out and buy it... otherwise they'll probably never release the bloody album! Anyway, hope this gives a bit of hope to anyone who was feeling increasing ambivalence toward these upcoming releases! Staggboy
Hello All, Well... after Peo's review I was dreading playing my CD Single that arrived today... I had heard the track from the internet through my little PC speakers but wanted to reserve judgement until I heard the "proper" release... and now I have. :o) I'm not going to go into any great depth or compare this with other tracks that you may hear in a club, because I don't go to any, but here's my view Don't let what you've heard from those mp3 cloud your expectations. But if you do I'm sure you'll be in for a nice surprise! Hearing TDF 03 through your Hi Fi is how it's meant to be played and WOW! From the first couple of bars you know it's KRAFTWERK... and then that carries on throughout the 3 "Etape"s (as Mark said they run together as one). This is what I've been waiting for and having heard it a few times now am certainly NOT dissapointed... I prefer this to EXPO. I must dissagree with Peo's statement: "For those of you who heard the radio sample of Etappe 2, you know what to expect; it's just more of it.". Because of this I was sooooo surprised and pleased that it just wasn't so. Even the long version IS different AND keeps you hooked in. Of course all of this is somewhat meaningless.. as the opinion that is going to matter the most.. is your own! Have fun and roll on that LP and of course Keep Werking John www.keepwerking.co.uk
