Re: [Kraftwerk] Computer Love. Was: Kraftwerkfans unite!
Even though it might not make you a troll, that is indeed a very controversial opinion to hold on a Kraftwerk list. ;)
One of the most beautiful pieces of music ever recorded, in my opinion.
Yes, in your opinion. But get this. I LOVE Neon Lights and Europe Endless. So work that out! I much prefer the Mix version of Computer Love actually. Now that is great. I never liked Neon Lights, since some of the instruments came in too loud compared to other songs on my CD...yes, the Mix's Computer Love is superior except for the beginning... Signed, omegaChance http://www.mp3.com/omegaChance

Ah, sacrilege! Even though The Mix sounded good at the time, it has aged much worse than their previous albums. In my opinion, I'd better add or I'll incur all kinds of wrath. ;) Erik (BTW, why all the "get this" and "work that out"? There's enough aggro on this list as it is.)
i think the mix is the difference between the "old" kw fans and the "new" fans. over the years i noticed on this list that everybody who was a fan in the 70's and 80's doesn't like the mix that much. but it can not be ignored that a lot of younger fans discovered kw via the mix (i for one am one of them). so for the "new" fans the mix will always be one of the best (maybe the best) kw albums. just trying to find an answer to a discussion that keeps comming back... g webmaster@slystone.com wrote: Rob Evans wrote:

typical KRAUTROCK, nothing special at that time. there were a lot of bands like Organisation, and most of them did more or less the same. the main point was: it had to be different from the bands we knew from gb or usa. jan _________________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? ------------------- Almost all of my African friends who I burn music for absolutely LOVE Computer World, especially Computer Love. It's a guaranteed winner. This is very revealing about the power of well researched and genuinely good music. Obviously KW's best werk. Hats off to Ralf, Karl and the crew. amir

Well, I've been a fan of Kraftwerk for a long time, but nowhere near as long as some of the people on here. I was born in the year when Radio-Activity came out which means I was 16 when The Mix came out. I had heard some Kraftwerk stuff before that but I think The Mix was the first Kraftwerk album I bought. And although I loved it at the time and it could be said to have heightened my interest for the band, the big point for me is that it just doesn't have the longevity of the earlier stuff. And today, for me, it would be a contender for the worst Kraftwerk album. It just feels quite unnecessary. Still wondering why they released it, could it maybe have been that they needed some money to buy new bikes? Erik
Agreed! I've only played the Mix 4 times since I excitedly bought it eons ago. I have tons of disco from the '70's that would put it to shame. The previous KW albums sound even better with age! I started loving KW ever since TEE was played for 20 minutes at all the discos. And the "skinny tie" fashion look was just beginning to return to the black neighborhoods in 1977 and 78... like the TEE album cover :-) KW was COOL! amir Erik Jälevik wrote:

IIRC, at that time they changed their Kling Klang studio from analogue to digital and they started a tour in a few German and Italian venues in order to test the enhanced (digitally) songs, then they released it to avoid bootlegs. DER AUTOMAT ®

Is this so? If so can you state a source? I had always assumed that these gigs were to 'test' what they were doing in the studio on a live audience prior to the LP being released. You appear to be implying that they were working in the studio... but NOT planning to release anything? Keep Werking John www.keepwerking.co.uk
I spoke to Ralf after one of these Italian concerts and he told me that they were definitely going to release a new album - he defined it as a "live" album, but added that it would be recorded in studio. That left me slightly puzzled... Ciao, Luca

I think that's right, they wanted also to have "feedback" to their (newly mixed) songs from the audience. BTW, these songs played at the '90 italien tour are, IMO, an interesting and nice piece of Kraftwerkian music, i like them. Some of them sound more the original version, some more the "the mix"-version. Gruesse aus Wien, Georgie

I think they didn't plan to release a greatest hits album at least in the beginning. Nevertheless this is obviously just my point of view and I could be wrong. DER AUTOMAT ® np: Röyksopp 'Remind me'
I think I can count myself among the old-timers - I bought my first KW album (TEE) in 1977. In my opinion, "The Mix" is, er, a "mix" of good and bad. "The Robots" and "Radioactivity" are an example of well-reworked tracks, they're danceable and groovy. "Pocket calculator" is good too. On the other hand, the new versions of "Autobahn" and "TEE" seem to lose most of their magic (though I love the cheesy "voco-yodel" choirs in Autobahn ;-). Summary: "The Mix" was, after all, a well thought-out product, capable of satisfying (albeit partially) long-time KW fans (after all, we were and are so hungry for anything new...) and simultaneously appealing enough for new listeners. Now to span another thread: I listened to countless KW mixes and most of them (excluding the Kevorkian ones) sound like useless crap to me. Any recommendations? Ciao, Luca

Yes, "Autobahn" definitely loses magic except for the 2nd cheesy yodels...I dont care for the regular yodels after the radio verse... I think the "Trans-Europe Express" vocoded speech is magnificent on The Mix version...I like their choice to leave out Iggy Pop and Bowie's name, too. The Mix shouldn't have had Dentaku and should have had The Model or Neon Lights instead... Signed, omegaChance http://www.mp3.com/omegaChance

that's wrong, as far as i'm concerned. but one thing is obvious, at least to me: when it was new, "the mix" sounded in keeping with the times. today it's my impression that it sounds a bit stale. but at the end of the eighties i had the same impression with TEE and Mensch-Maschine, and at the end of the seventies i had the same impression with the beatles. today all this stuff is simply classics, and the sound is part of their time. so maybe we have to wait another ten or fifteen years to form a final judgment on "the mix". jan _________________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Good point. You might be right. Just like I think some of the stuff that's come out recently and which has mostly been regarded as disposable commercial pop might very well become classics of the future. Erik

---------------- We already waited. It sounds dated and the curve is going down. It's like the innovators decided to "follow." If you put on Europe Endless, or It's Better To Compute now it's like a jewel against a backdrop of today's recycled rap and bland guitars with stupid ass hooks. amir

Disagree. I discovered Kraftwerk in the early 80s with the Man Machine, but Computer World and The Mix are my two favorite albums. The Mix is essentially a techno remix project of Computer World. They both sound great. -- /* Soleil */
It's funny to see that people spend time on complaining how bad this list is, and/or wether one should join another list. Because the exact same thing is happening on the Jarre list. Exact same topics. I guess both things come from lack of news/info about the artist. Glenn

--------------- Reminds me of when the Stones did "Miss You" and got on the disco bandwagon. For many, the Rolling Stones "started" around the mid seventies because many young fans started buying RS records without Mom's allowance. Gradually they see the genius of "Satisfaction" and earlier RS hits from the 60's. amir
